Southampton’s Championship play-off win over West Brom descends into chaos as police are forced to separate fans after pitch invasion in which rockets are thrown

Southampton and West Brom fans appeared to throw shots at each other as the Saints celebrated booking their places in the Championship play-off final.

Russell Martin’s side dominated the second leg at St Mary’s on Friday night, winning 3-1 on the night and netting thanks to a strike from Will Smallbone and a brace from Adam Armstrong.

They take on Leeds at Wembley next weekend as both sides aim for an immediate return to the Premier League after last season’s relegation.

After the full-time whistle, hundreds of home fans stormed the pitch to celebrate their side’s progress to the final and appeared to chase away supporters before scenes turned ugly.

In social media footage, a shot appeared to be thrown into the crowd on the pitch from what appeared to be an outdoor area, with another fan throwing another into the stands.

Other footage showed stewards and police holding back Southampton fans from reaching the end, with ‘Albion’ hearts chanting in videos shared online.

The photos showed fans from outside trying to get onto the pitch.

It was a delayed pitch invasion, with the Southampton team initially congratulating each other after managers Russell Martin and Carlos Corberan shook hands.

Smallbone was all smiles as he made his way from the bench to the pitch before the first group of fans entered the pitch.

The sea began to make its way onto the field, fans held flags in the air and flares could be seen on the field.

The home supporters seemed to cheer the away end full of fans who will have to watch their team in championship action again next season.

Both Southampton and West Brom have been contacted for comment.

West Brom started well in the game, putting in a low block in an attempt to counter the home side’s possession-based game.

Initially the plan worked, with the score 0-0 at half-time mirroring the score from last week’s first leg at Hawthrons.

However, Smallbone opened the scoring in the 49th minute, so the visitors had to score if they wanted to at least take the game to extra time.

Armstrong scored to take the game away from West Brom, with a Cedric Kirpe goal deep into stoppage time to no avail.
