Susie O’Neill announces shock career move: ‘I thought it would be fun!’


She is one of Australia’s most respected athletes.

And now famous Olympian Susie O’Neill is set to launch a new career as a DJ.

The 50-year-old mother-of-two, of swimming fame, will make her Brisbane decks nightclub debut later this month.

«When I was younger I never went to nightclubs because I was always swimming,» she admitted in a new interview with the Courier-Mail on Wednesday.

«So I thought maybe it would be fun not just to go to a nightclub, but to be a DJ,» she explained.

The Brisbane sporting legend, who co-hosts the Ash, Luttsy & Susie O’Neill show on Nova 106.9, will play an exclusive gig at Fortitude Valley’s MET nightclub on May 23.

And nightclubbers will only be able to get tickets through a competition on Susie’s breakfast radio show.

Elsewhere in the chat, Susie teased that fans can expect an unusual setlist from her show.

«We’re going to try to make it a mix of current things but also nostalgic things that people will remember,» she said.

A gifted swimmer, Susie rose to fame at the age of 14 after joining the Olympic team and went on to win 35 Australian titles.

Known as ‘Madame Butterfly’ during her stellar sporting career, Susie branded her DJ set ‘Butterfly and Bangers’ as a tribute to her amazing years as a swimmer.

She has been a fixture on Nova since 2013, first as a sports presenter and later as a presenter alongside the breakfast team Ashley Bradnam, Kip Wightman and David Lutteral.

Susie retired from swimming after the 2000 Olympics. She shares two sons, 19-year-old Alix and 18-year-old Bill, with her husband, ophthalmologist Cliff Fairley.
