TV reporter’s son pays heartwarming on-air tribute to late father: ‘You’ll always be my hero’

The teenage son of beloved showbiz reporter and KTLA anchor Sam Rubin has paid tribute to his father, who died suddenly on Friday after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital.

Sam Rubin, 64, suffered a heart attack at his home after doing his regular morning Hollywood news segment.

On Monday, Sam’s 16-year-old son Colby bravely sat together on the same set where his father sat alongside his KTLA father just last week as he paid tribute to his father.

Colby, who is one of four children, choked up several times during the seven-minute, heart-wrenching segment as he read aloud a letter that was personally addressed to his father.

It left those gathered around the announcer’s desk in tears as staff at the local television station mourned the death of Rubin, who had been on the station since 1991.

Cory Rubin, 16, the teenage son of TV reporter Sam Rubin, paid tribute following his sudden death from a heart attack in Los Angeles.

«The outpouring (of support) has been overwhelming,» Colby said during the KTLA broadcast. ‘And people I didn’t even know are reaching out… I was on a trip with my dad and people from that trip from another country said ‘We’re so sorry,’ so it’s like a reunion.’

Colby then read part of a letter he wrote to his late father live on television.

«Hey dad, I wrote this under the table in your cubicle where you caught me sleeping, but you didn’t wake me up there this time,» Colby began. “Dad, I can’t believe you’re gone. You’ll never pick me up from school again, we’ll never ride bikes, we’ll never fight over food, you won’t be at my wedding. I can’t believe you’re gone,” Colby said through tears.

‘I love you so much. You were the kindest soul. There was light in every room. I can’t imagine my life without you,” Colby continued.

“You took me to every scout meeting. Every physical therapy visit. Every trip to Disney.

“More than anything, I wish I could show you how grateful I am and how much I love you. I can’t believe you’re gone,” he added as emotions ran high.

“You were an incredible father and friend. You told me so much about life on our car rides. About your work, about how you woke up every day and had to do what you love.

“I idolized you. You were and are – you will forever be my hero. And I never had to tell you and I’m so sorry.’

The emotion was just too much for Rubin’s co-hosts Jessica Holmes, Mark Kriski, Frank Buckley and Dayna Devon, who were visibly emotional.

“You always knew what to say and you helped me so much in life. Every day you helped me and encouraged me. I am completely who I am because of you. You were always smiling and laughing and you were everything good in the world,” Colby said.

“I can’t believe I lost you. You took care of me and helped others around you. You instilled in me a moral compass and values that I will hold onto for the rest of my life. Dad, I’m so proud to be your son. You are a beautiful person and will never be forgotten. Dad, I love you. I’m so lost without you I will miss you every day.’
