Union Berlin manager Nenad Bjelica has been banned for three matches and fined £21,000 after pushing Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane in the face, sparking a brawl.

Union Berlin coach Nenad Bjelica was banned for three matches and fined 21,351 pounds (25,000 euros) on Thursday after shoving Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane, the German Football Association (DFB) said.

The Croatian coach was sent off after 74 minutes of Wednesday’s 1-0 Bundesliga loss to Bayern after shoving Sane.

A player went to collect the ball from Bjelic near the Union bench for a throw-in.

He pushed the ball out of the coach’s hands and Bjelic then put his hands on the German international’s face twice and pushed him away.

It caused unsavory scenes on the sidelines with a brawl between staff and players of both teams.

Tottenham’s Eric Dier, who came on after half-time to make his debut for the Bundesliga club, also tried to diffuse the tension by picking apart Sane and Bjelica.

«Nenad Bjelica has been suspended for the next three league matches and fined €25,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct,» the DFB said in a statement.

Following the incident, referee Frank Willenborg showed Bjelic a red card for violent conduct, with the 52-year-old seen venting his frustration in front of several fans as he made his way to the stands. Sane also received a yellow card for his part in the altercation.

Asked if he would apologize to the 28-year-old, Bjelica said after the match: «Only to my team. He does not tolerate it. Not with San. He comes to me to provoke me. Of course, I don’t react the way I should as a coach. Nothing else to say.»

“I’m in my zone and I want to give him the ball. He pushed me. Then of course I reacted,» he added.

Sane also commented on the incident: ‘Actually I just want to get the ball back quickly so I can start another attack,’ he said.

“And then it got a little wild and he grabbed my face.

Raphael Guerreiro’s second-half strike was the only goal of the game as Bayern won 1–0

Bayern would go on to win when Rafael Gurreiro capitalized on a defensive error to score the winner in the 46th minute.

After the match, Thomas Tuchel offered his perspective on the incident, saying: “It’s not good. It’s hard to defend him. But I don’t want to say anything about that. I don’t need to add fuel to the fire.’

Bjelica, who joined in November, will now miss his side’s Bundesliga games against Darmstadt 98, RB Leipzig and Mainz 05.

Union, who finished fourth last year to qualify for the Champions League, are currently in 15th place with 14 points, three above the relegation play-off spot.
