Westfield Bondi Junction stabbing: Dawn Singleton’s sister breaks silence to pay emotional tribute


The sister of Westfield Bondi Junction stabbing victim Dawn Singleton has revealed how videos of her slain sibling laughing helped her get over the huge tragedy.

Sally Singleton-Hawach, who is the daughter of advertising giant John Singleton with 25-year-old Dawn, paid a heartfelt tribute on April 13 to her sister, who was one of the six victims of Joel Cauchi’s stabbing.

It comes as NSW Premier Chris Minns and state MPs officially paid tribute to the victims of those who lost their lives in the horrific atrocity.

Coogee MP Marjorie O’Neill, whose East Sydney electorate covers Westfield, was among those who paid tearful tributes in Parliament on Tuesday.

Ms Singleton was farewelled by her loved ones in a private ceremony last week.

In an emotional post on social media, Ms Singleton-Hawach shared a photo collage of her little sister growing up.

She said «Dawnie» «epitomizes love» and ‘he always spoke words of such kindness… wwith a smile that warmed all our hearts.

«And I replay that laugh in my videos,» Ms Singleton-Hawach wrote.

“You were so loved. I love you, little sister. Until we meet again’.

Ms Singleton was due to marry her high school sweetheart, NSW police officer Ashley Wildey, in the coming months.

The bride-to-be bought her wedding dress and sent out «save the date» invitations to her loved ones and friends a few days in advance.

Dawn is one of Singleton’s three daughters from his marriage to Julia Martin.

He has eight children in total.

In the NSW Parliament on Tuesday, Msgr O’Neill said the raw shock of the tragedy is still reverberating in the community where she lives represents.

«There hasn’t been a day since April 13 that I haven’t met someone who was there during the incident and who would normally have been there at that time,» she said.

«Any one of us could have been hit and that’s why our community is so strongly supporting the victims of this horrific act.»

Family and friends of the stabbing victims watched from the public gallery as Mrs O’Neill was one of many MPs who tearfully paid tribute to the tragic events.

Ms Neill said with sadness that she saw resilience among her constituents.

“There is more light than darkness in our community,” she said.

«Amid the sadness, there were moments of light as our community came together to remember the lives lost.»

Vaucluse MP Kellie Sloan, whose electorate also includes part of Bondi, said the memories of those lost would be preserved.

«There was a mother taking her little girl to buy a birthday present, there was a bride-to-be getting ready for her wedding, a young mother shopping with her baby and students celebrating the end of their exams,» she said.

«A beautiful hope filled lives with so much potential, so cruelly cut short.»

Jade Young, Ashlee Good, Faraz Tahir, Pikria Darchia and Yixuan Cheng were also killed as Cauchi walked through the shopping complex looking for victims.

Twelve people were also taken to hospital that day, including nine-month-old Harriet, Mrs Good’s daughter.
