Wild scenes at Vivid Sydney where hundreds of terrified crowds are caught up in the ‘mob’

Festival-goers at the Vivid Sydney light show were left terrified after being caught in a «crowd stampede» at Circular Quay.

Hundreds of people were trapped for up to 30 minutes near the overseas passenger terminal after the drone show ended at 9.10pm on Saturday.

NSW Police officers were forced to remove metal barriers to let the crowd leave the area as people jostled and pushed from the cul-de-sacs.

«I felt like I was going to die,» one attendee told Daily Mail Australia.

«It was terrifying. All it would take is one person pushing too hard or someone falling for the situation to be catastrophic.

“There was no form of crowd control. It was shocking and clearly poorly handled.

“People walked through the cafeterias to find their way out of the crowd. One of the women who was sitting down to eat said that people who came to the restaurant were leaving because there were so many people in the open air area.

“It is sad that businesses have been losing money when Vivid is designed to bring business to the CBD. We decided to push through the crowd until we got to the lane and were able to get out, and then we went home.”

Another attendee, who sent photos of the mayhem to X, expressed outrage at the «absolutely dangerous scenes at the Vivid festival».

«After the drone show ended at 9:10 p.m., crowds began to build at the overseas passenger terminal,» they wrote.

“The police had to step in to remove the barriers because it was serious.

They said the «management of people» at the popular event was «very poor».

«For example, people streaming into dead ends like food trucks at the passenger terminal entrance and having to turn back,» they said.

Another woman said staff were unable to clear the crowd from the chaos.

“We waited one hour standing to see 10 average drone formations and lots of ads. And it took us 30 minutes to leave the place,” she said.

“We had to get on the grass bed to avoid the crowded section. It’s half a meter high, but we have a child and an elder.

«A child under one year old is crying in the crowd. Even as an adult, I felt left out. Very poorly organized. I don’t recommend it. I hope no one gets hurt

At 8.30pm, Vivid Sydney posted an X update warning that the event was experiencing large crowds due to the drone show and asked visitors to avoid Circular Quay.

«The show will also be broadcast live at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbor on the big screen and on the Vivid Sydney Facebook page,» the update said.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Vivid Sydney for comment.
