World Cup Qualifiers: South Africa hold Nigeria to 1-1 draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 1-1 with Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Coach Finidi George opted to start Southampton striker Paul Onuacha to lead the lines in place of Bayern Leverkusen’s Victor Bonifacio, with another surprise inclusion in midfield in Fisayo Dele-Basiru.

Nigeria were hoping to avoid a third successive draw in Group C World Cup qualifying, however South Africa’s Themba Zwane had something else in store when his 28th-minute strike beat Stanley Nwabali to give them an early lead.

Hugo Broose’s men looked more disciplined at the back with last-minute stops to deny UEFA Europa League final hero Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Nigeria finished the first half the better and went into the second half with renewed zest and were rewarded by Dele-Basira’s superb strike to beat Ronwen Williams for the equaliser.

Samuel Chukwueze’s performance almost put the Super Eagles ahead but the crossbar prevented the AC Milan man from keeping the score level.

Despite the flurry of attacks, Bafana Bafana remained determined to see out a draw.

Nigeria remain fifth with three points in the record table, a point behind South Africa who are on 4 points.
